Flowers | Helen McCullagh
Helen’s work is centred on colour. Best known for her still life oil paintings, she approaches each piece as a way of exploring how colour behaves. How it shifts, contrasts, and holds attention. There’s a balance in her work between control and instinct, built through years of practice.
She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Southern Cross University and has worked as both an artist and educator, including time with the Gallery of Modern Art. Her work is widely collected, both in Australia and internationally, and has been recognised through major prizes and consistent presence in editorial and interior publications.
She works intuitively, building layers of oil paint through a mix of soft application and thicker, more textured passages. Still life gives her the structure to explore colour deeply, without distraction. The focus is on composition, pattern, and the way elements sit together on the canvas. Painting, for her, is a form of immersion.
Helen’ donated piece marks a new beginning. It was the first work created in her newly built studio, set at the foothills of the Wet Tropics. Surrounded by natural light and dense greenery, the environment has shaped the work in a subtle way. There is a sense of calm in it, but also a quiet energy. A reflection of both place and process.
