Mum’s Paddock | Ben Ross
Ben Ross came to painting later in his life. After years working in the construction industry, he stepped away in 2019 following a period of severe depression. Looking for a reset, he travelled to Mexico.
The colour stayed with him. Bright, pastel tones, light, warmth. A different way of seeing. When he returned, he began painting, using that palette to explore themes of summer, love and happiness. Not in a forced way, but as something to move towards. His work is about feeling. About creating a moment where someone can pause, even briefly, and step outside of whatever they’re carrying. There’s a sense of openness to it. An invitation to sit with something lighter.
His donated piece ‘Mum’s Paddock’ is dedicated to his mum, and to Fabio. It imagines her riding freely for the first time, moving without restraint. Depicting a strong a sense of release.
