Retro Cowboy | Claudia Hiscox

At twenty-three, Moree-based artist Claudia Hiscox represents a younger generation of rural creatives carving out distinct visual identities.

Working under the name Mabel by Claudia, her practice centres on watercolour illustration with a playful, stylised edge. The piece donated for the activation, Retro Cowboy, is an A5 watercolour that nods to Western iconography through a contemporary lens. Small in scale but strong in personality, the work leans into nostalgia – cowboy hats, classic silhouettes –  while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic. 

Her work feels fresh and Claudia obviously understands rural symbolism but isn’t bound by tradition. Instead, she reinterprets it for a new audience.
